Often times, when people think of internet marketing, backlinks aren’t necessarily the first thing that enters their minds. However, this doesn’t mean that a backlink is not important and that it shouldn’t be part of your priorities. In fact, a backlink can be of significant help in boosting your website traffic, especially if you do it right. Now, before we get to that, let’s talk about what it is exactly. For the uninitiated, a backlink basically refers to any URL link coming from another website which, when clicked, would take the visitor directly to your homepage. In other words, a backlink acts like your business card or a reference card which could help give your business a lot more exposure.
Whilst backlinks are commonly seen as online referrals, they can also be used to gauge a particular website’s reputation. This is one of the reasons why many of the major search engines actually use these links when it comes to their search algorithms. These search engines catalogue the amount of links as well as the strength of the websites linking to a particular page and uses this information to rank you in comparison to other websites that are in the same niche. See? You can pretty much use backlinking as a way of getting more exposure for your website and at the same time, as a way to improve your search engine ranks. The best bit is that you need not spend a single dime.
However, one shouldn’t think that backlinks are a pretty straightforward way of internet marketing. Because let’s face it, when it comes to online marketing strategies, nothing is ever straightforward. So this is where it gets a little tricky. How do you get other websites to create a backlink to your website? The best way to do this is through an exchange. What you do is try and find other websites whose topics, products or services are related to yours. Afterwards, you send the webmaster and email regarding the link exchange and keep your fingers crossed that they accept. Most of the time, business owners would be happy with this kind of proposition. However, there are those who can be a little choosy.
What’s the best way to make sure that websites agree to exchanging backlinks with you? Well, your reputation should be good. After all, what business would want to refer people to another business whose reputation isn’t so nice? With that said, do pick and choose the kinds of websites you associate with. Make sure that they are related to your niche and that they are legit. Otherwise, they could drag your reputation down.
