With the option of readers today to easily download free ebooks, one can chase after a tardy rabbit in Alice in Wonderland one day, and pore through the intricacies of Java Programming the next. A few years back, this technology would have been hard to grasp, but now almost everything can be done with a flick of a button: so why not include reading electronic books or ebooks into the mix, right? While the environment may thank you for resorting to ebooks, believe it or not, there are also some reasons why to download free ebooks is not such a good idea.

1. Compatibility issues.
To download free ebooks may not cost a reader anything but in order to read it, he may need to purchase some software to make the ebook run on his preferred choice of gadget. Worse, he may need to buy a gadget he cannot afford in the first place just to be able to read the free ebook. This is the kind of irony that defeats the purpose of reading ebooks and one that borrowing from the library can very well remedy.

2. When it encourages poor writing skills.
With ebook publishing now getting popular, anybody can write and publish their creations and make it available for free online. While there is nothing wrong with this practice, self publishing one’s work rarely goes through a competent editor with years-long experience and skills that publishing houses retain.

3. When it makes you spend more time on the computer.
Let’s face it, the time we spend on the computer is probably eating up most of our waking hours. Do we really need to add more to that by reading ebooks? Unless we take some time out of surfing or answering emails and spend it instead on reading, then it might come out the same. Otherwise, it might be better to use the time to be with family and friends.

4. When it just clutters.
Granting that ebooks do save more trees from being cut down, but to download free ebooks may not help either if it will just clutter your computer or gadget for space. Junk is still junk whether it is electronic or not.

5. The most common reason.
Finally, there’s the lack of paper smell. Purists simply miss the smell of paper and ink that has been part and parcel of reading a good book.
Of course, when it comes to reading, each person is free to decide on what medium to use.
