Metro Ethernet service providers are a relatively new creature on the communication scene. These services grew out of a need for companies and individuals to share data over a private network system. This service was born from the concept of Ethernet network communication. To understand this we need to examine what Ethernet is and how it works.
Ethernet technology was first considered in the 70’s and implemented in the 80’s. What this meant is that data could now travel from one computer to another much like voice traveled from one person to another over a land line phone system. This technology provided a way for data to be carried along an electromagnetic wire for the purpose of sharing files.
There was a evolutionary process that communication underwent before network communication systems could go from Local area networks, better known as LANS to Metro Area Networks or MANS. This evolution involved the improvement capabilities. Initially the networks were only capable of one way traffic. This meant that only one user could send data at a time. In order for Ethernet communication to become efficient and useful it needed to expand its capabilities. Through this evolutionary process networks became possible to carry communication in two directions and eventually could be used by multiple users at one time.
With the improvement of Ethernet networks capabilities the networks became more and more utilized. Since they were now more efficient and of more benefit to its users. When the networks grew the need for service providers arose. However before these could be utilized outside of a local area network a few concerns needed to be addressed.
One of these concerns was speed. The first Ethernet networks were rather slow but in time network speed improved. When measuring speed of network the figure that is under question is the bytes per second of information that a network is able to carry. The first networks had the ability to carry to bytes per second. This meant they were basically using less for major applications.
Through technological advancements this speed improved to 1000 bytes or a gigabyte per second of information. To understand this imagine a messenger carry a letter by horse across country then imagine the same messenger carrying the same letter by jet, you can visualize the difference between 10 bytes per second and 1 gigabyte per second.
The other point that needs to be fixed was that Ethernet networks had a bad habit of taking the information from one user and giving it to all the other users. This would Kind of be like a gossip telling your most valued secrets to everyone it knew. Naturally this was an undesired habit and needed to be fixed before they could become an efficient means of data transfer.
When these problems were removed from the way the networks operated, they could be considered a productive way to communicate files. A business developed out of this situation. The business created Metro Ethernet service providers. These providers offer a service that takes the Internet from being a local area network to a Metro area network, or said another way from the confines of one building to every building in a major metropolitan area.
