Where typical auctions require buyers to attempt to out bid one another for the highest price to purchase an item, reverse auctions turn this idea around, requiring sellers to compete for the buyers’ business. Reverse auctions, which have also been known as service auctions, were more common among corporations until recently, especially web-based auctioning platforms, and were used for sourcing, often called “e-procurement.” Over the past few years, money spent on reverse auctions by businesses has dropped to an average of five percent of all corporate spending, where it used to be a much higher number. Now, reverse auctions can suit both large and small value contracts for both private and public organizations, sourcing buyer-designed goods and services.

While many buyers assume that reverse auctions always provide savings, this is not always the case. Although sellers have to compete for the buyers’ interests, reverse auctions can sometimes end up costing just as much as typical auctions, whether it be from the item’s price, or the total cost involved. A number of reverse auctions, because of the initial low prices, cost for the buyers to participate it, and therefore tend to bring a good amount of revenue from both the fee from the bid, and the payment from the item. Suppliers and buyers alike are commonly advised to verify if there is a value proposition to even justify being a part of the auction.

Reverse auctions are becoming more popular at the moment, with tons of different services and items available through different portals. They first appeared around the 1990’s, with the growth of the internet, and the shopping possibilities available. Some reverse auctions are for freelancers, and the sellers are companies or publications that need writing done by the bidders. Other reverse auctions are popping up as shopping marketplaces online. Buyers participate in “bid shopping,” where they can use the supplier’s bid to obtain a lower price from other sellers. Since the resurgence of popularity in typical auctions, a select few shopping websites have decided their way to combat and compete the auction-craze would be to provide a whole different style of shopping.

Before participating in a reverse auction, one should consider all the options available. Just like with any other method of shopping, it is important to weigh the costs, and there are definitely savings available with reverse auctions, if the buyer is willing to compare and contrast a few different options beforehand.
