Whether you have family or friends abroad or just have a poor telephone service plan, it can sometimes be difficult to justify making those important telephone calls and instead use less personal communication methods like email. Though it’s easy to make sure that you don’t miss anything when you send an email and you can also ensure that you phrase things just right, the medium loses something compared to a good old fashioned chinwag, but what do you do if that call is going to cost an arm and a leg? This is where VoIP phones can prove to be invaluable.
VoIP phones – or Voice over Internet Protocol – utilise services like Skype and are mostly what the name implies; a telephone call over the internet. Although this sounds complicated, the service is both deceptively simple and is also largely what the internet is for. The internet began life as a communications network for the US, and so it’s easy to see how the infrastructure is built for this application, it just took a few years for the bandwidth and technology to catch up to the point we’re at now where we can use the internet to stream high definition video, crystal clear music and our own voices to anywhere in the world.
Using VoIP technology is the ideal alternative to email or costly international phone calls; with most of us being signed up to internet packages which give us a flat base rate and with the relatively low levels of bandwidth required by voice communication, we can talk, use webcams and surf the internet at the same time for no additional cost compared to the prices we can look forward to for international calls.
Often available for far less than you would expect, VoIP phones are the affordable, easy to use alternative to international calls. The technology allows us to send those all-important messages anywhere in the world in the most personal way possible, rather than the sterility of words on a screen, saving us money – in some cases a lot of money – with no compromise on the quality of the communication, sometimes actually improving it.
Thanks to this new technology, especially when combining VoIP phones with a webcam and a free communications application such as Skype, those video calls to anywhere in the world we were promised all those years ago in sci fi films are finally a possibility. Thanks to VoIP technology, the future’s finally here – and it’s cheaper than we thought possible.
