I remember when “X” marked the spot. Pirate treasure, hidden gold, a wealth of jewels – if you followed the signs, looked for the clues, you might get lucky. You might get rich. People are still searching for the quick way to get rich – the “X” that marks the gold. Only this time they’re looking for their Google fortune; the Internet being the new, mysterious landscape that’s hiding the wealth.
If you read enough articles on the Internet – or even the newspaper or listen to the news these days – it seems as though the only way to independent wealth these days is through the Internet. But if you decide to begin the search for your own person “X” – your Google Fortune – then beware of the obstacles in your way.
The number one obstacle: the Google kit scam. This one is fairly common and has been written about a lot. The way this operation works is pretty simple, and is being used by more people than I can probably count. People identify what phrases you’ll be searching – things like “work from home,” or “Internet business opportunities.”
Once they have identified these phrases, they then put up ads or create web pages that will come up when you search these terms. The general sales pitch they come up with runs along the lines of “make hundreds of dollars a day working for Google,” or “make up to $5000 a month working with Google and Yahoo,” etc.
The truth is they have no relation to Google whatsoever, other than that you find them during your Google fortune search. The sellers of the Google kit scam are taking advantage of those who are searching for their fortune. They know what you want to hear – that there are opportunities to make big money, and these opportunities are backed by a trustworthy source like Google.
But the truth is – for better or worse – there was never any “X” marking the spot. Not when we were kids looking for pirate gold, and not these days when we are looking for financial independence to benefit us and our families. Spending time on the Internet looking for magical opportunities simply isn’t worth it.
The way to your Google fortune is the same as the way to any fortune – find an idea that you can work with. Create a product, a blog, a website. Put in the time and effort to get traffic to your little corner of the web, and then turn that traffic into money, whether by selling a product, a service, a concept, or by participating in advertising programs or affiliate marketing options.
Except for winning the lottery or marrying into a family that already has money, I don’t really know of a way to become rich without putting in the time and effort. But, if you are willing to put in the time and effort now – and avoid the Google kit scam – then you could very well make your own “X.”
