Should You Sell That Item on eBay?

If your budget is tight, you may have thought about selling possessions on eBay to raise some cash. But is your item really worth selling on eBay?

First, check completed auctions for the item on eBay. Are many auctions ending with actual sales? If the majority of the listings aren’t selling, then your item probably won’t either, unless there is something extraordinary about it such as an autographed copy of a book.

Figure the average selling price for the completed auctions, and also compare some of the descriptions for the condition as compared to your item. For example, brand new items often bring more than something that is gently used. Are the selling prices of comparable items an acceptable price to you for your item?

Next, you will need to consider shipping costs. Check what other sellers were charging as you will need to be competitive in order to command a similar selling price. Check the website of the shipper you plan to use to find out the actual costs. This may vary according to your buyer’s destination, so look at the worst case scenario. Also, if you have a large or bulky item, make sure that the shipper will actually accept it. In some cases such as when shipping furniture, a specialty shipper may be needed.

You may find that the norm for a particular item is to offer free or cut-rate shipping. If so, you will want to factor this into the profit that you expect to make from your sale. Also, eBay selling and listing fees will take a portion away from your sale.

Packing material costs also need to be researched. High-volume sellers often get discounted packaging supplies. You may find that purchasing a box with packing material or a padded envelope at your local office supply store to be fairly costly. Before you think about skimping on the packaging, remember that buyers will often leave negative feedback if a purchase is not well-packaged.

Your time can also be a factor in the cost. Potential buyers often have questions about auctions, and they expect prompt responses. You also have to prepare the item listing, correspond with the buyer at the auction close, get packaging materials, package the item, and take the item to the shipper. This could easily take an hour or more of your time per item, especially if you are not familiar with selling on eBay.

If your item is valuable, you may want to use an eBay selling service. These stores take care of the entire auction for you in exchange for a portion of the sale. They have minimum expected selling prices for items that they will take which is often fifty dollars or more.

Should you sell that item on eBay? If the profit margin is acceptable to you after taking the expected selling price and subtracting all of your costs, then that item is a candidate for an eBay auction.
